Vanity Update
Vanity was doing well (for an old girl) until thanksgiving weekend. She started feeling sick. We ended up going to the emergency clinic. She was diagnosed with a pyometra. Which is in a massive infection. It was very sad as it is completely preventable by spaying. So with her age and other issues it was decided the best thing for her was to euthanize her. This is the biggest reason I preach spay/neuter to people. She also had mammary tumors (also a result of not being spayed) which were most likely cancerous. It was a sad day but at least she is pain free now.

Turtles Of The Oil Spill

Sorry there haven't been any posts for a while. Duke is doing great! I have been spending a lot of time washing turtles affected in the oil spill here. Here are a couple before and after pics. Also a softshell and a threatened Spotted Turtle. They are protected by Michigan law. If anyone is interested in following updates on the animals in the oil spill you can do so by going to Binder Park Zoo on facebook. There is also video of some of them being released!

Sirens
Duke never barks. Storms do not bother him. People knocking at my door do not bother him. Strangers to him have walked right in my house and he just attacks them with a wagging tail. But when he hears sirens...... .

A New Guy
This poor Chi Chi has had a rough life by the looks of him! He was a stray that showed up in some guys garage in December. He was cold and a skeleton. The guy now did not want him and was asking someone what you can buy in the store to euthanize a dog at home. So, I was told about him and he ended up here until I can find him a foster or a home. He will be going to the vet next week. I was a little worried about how Duke would be with him. I just picked the chi up yesterday and I let Duke meet him today. He was very well behaved and just wanted to check him out. They were calling him Paco, he is half the size of the cat and weighs 5#. Hopefully he can find a final forever home! Duke, does have an adoption pending!! He goes in for round 2 heart worm treament next week.

Heart Worm Treatment Round 1
Duke went in Thursday for his 1st treatment. He behaved very well for them. His blood work looked good and his x rays were ok. He had his first injection Thurs afternoon and I picked him up yesterday afternoon. He looks very worn out and tired but overall is doing well. He pretty much just sleeps and eats right now. He is on pain medication since the site where he got the injection is very painful. So in a month he will do it all over again.... Vet bill so far $513.74, thank you to those who have helped him out!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to the vet today
Took Duke in to the vet today. His heart worm antigen test was positive (meaning there are adult worms in his heart). His microfilaria test (babies in the blood) was negative. He starts meds tomorrow for 2 weeks and then will get his first injection. He will spend the night in the hospital and then a month later get 2 more injections. He did very well at his appointment. Didn't flinch when they took his blood and kept trying to give the doctor kisses! He weighed 74# and needs to gain at least 10 more!

Meet Duke!
Meet Duke. A 3 yr old bullmastiff boy. Duke has had a sad journey thus far. His owners surrendered him to animal control. His history says he lived outside during the day with another bully and was only let in the house for the night. He has scars on his face from getting beat up by another dog. Most likely they were bored to death out there alone and took it out on each other. They didn't bother to neuter them, nor give them heartworm preventative. They ended up at animal control. The other bully was adopted but Duke tested positive for heartworm. No one was jumping in line to adopt a dog that needed expensive medical care. Enter Mary Paetz... She hadn't even met him but started sending mass emails on a Monday saying his last day was the next day. He spent 30 days in doggie jail. She paid to bail him out of jail and transported him up to Lansing (and got him a burger on the way!). He came into bullmastiff rescue 6-4-2010.
He was pretty sad looking and confused. Couldn't even get a tail wag out of him. Just looked very drepressed. He got a bath, some food and some love. Now, 24 hours later, the tail doesn't stop, nor the kisses and the hand shakes. He is a perfect gentleman. Besides getting smacked around by the cats he has settled right in.
He will be starting his pre heartworm treatment 6-10-2010. Then a couple of weeks after that the harder stuff starts. So I decided to make him his own blog!
